The Tory’s have recently stated that one of their intentions, should they get into Government next time, will be to make single mother’s on welfare go out to work once their youngest child reaches school age. There were two basic opinions expressed by the public on this topic; the overwhelming majority of people polled agreed that such a move would be welcomed by the tax payers. The other, though less in number, opinion was that it would create difficulties for single mothers. You have to look at both side though.
Whilst I agree that a mother needs to be the ‘constant’ carer in a childs early years there is no proof at all that children of working mother’s suffer social problems. Women do need to earn their own money, they do need a life away from the home, and yes, even away from the kids for a certain amount of time. Women do need independance and financial security. The only way to achieve this is to go out into paid employment. We all know how expensive quality childcare is, of course it should not be free. Those working to care for our children have to be paid.
But those Mums who have spent years on welfare and relying on a pension have special needs. They don’t have a partner to share the workload with, if their child gets sick and cannot attend daycare she will have to take time off work. Childcare will take a huge chunk out of her wages as well, not all of us have a Mum, aunt or sister to fall back on for support.
But I think it would be a great move to encourage single Mum’s to take their control of their own futures. The Govt could do a lot to make this more achievable for these women.
