Of course it is only fitting we devote an article to Ireland’s patron saint today as it is St Patrick’s day! well, an article with him in mind anyway…

But what do you reckon? what do you think would be going through Patrick’s mind if he landed in Ireland today? seeing as he was responsible for driving all the snakes and vermin out of the Emerald Isle all those centuries ago I would say he’d have the environmentalists on his back if he tried to do the same these days.

And back then if he ever had a few Roman coins on him he would have hidden them under a rock for safe keeping; not a bad idea sometimes considering banking practices today. People from all over the world bring their money to invest in Ireland today. And all those grassy tracks he walked; the Romans never built the network of roads in Ireland that they did over the water in England - the EU has accomplished what Caesar could not afford to do in building extensive new motorways linking the north to the south.

On his travels he would have slept in the open, or under vast oak trees - today millions of tourists stay in lovely B&B’s, Guesthouses and Five Star hotels. Maybe he would carry a backpack today and stay in a hostel on his missionary work - the backpacker’s company Hostel World started in Dublin in 1989 with just a listing of five hostels and today is a worldwide organisation with some 10,000 properties on it’s books.

Yes, Ireland has come a long, long way since Saint Patrick walked it’s green shores but I reckon he would like what he saw if he was to return just for a day. But I wonder what he’d make of all that green beer!

Happy Saint Patrick’s Day!
