If there’s one thing about travelling to an airport for a flight it’s that it’s a certainty to up your stress levels. I have wondered why normally calm and passive folk suddenly turn into pushing, shoving demons once a foot is set in the terminal and I think I have worked it out.
It’s all the stimuli for a start – it’s excessive; all that digital signage flashing at you, the announcements concerning your flight which you can never hear properly because everyone wont stop talking…
Your personal space is invaded and violated to an incredible degree; standing in the check-in queue there are those annoying people who insist on standing toe-to-heel behind you and those who stand on the side and try to shove in ahead of you. You go to the loo and someone always tries the door even though it says ‘locked’.
In the departure lounge people spread out on the seats and place their feet touching your leg. In the boarding queue the pack-animal mentality causes the young, fit (and ignorant) to push your pram out of the way and their cabin baggage against your legs. The elderly would get walked over if they allowed it…
And on the plane itself – you are seated centimetres from complete strangers, for hours at a stretch, who like to rest their arm against yours and even use your shoulder as a drool catcher when they nod off…
The plane toilet is harrowing enough; the little red light flashes whenever you close the door and announces to the other passengers that you are in the loo yet again – and someone always tries the door even though it is locked…
And we travel for relaxation and pleasure…?
