Couples need a Will as well

I have taken my own good advice and made an appointment to see the solicitor next week to make out my Will. Of course I told him “it’s not too complicated, just some formalities…” but then he told me things to consider and that’s when I realised that nothing in this area is uncomplicated.

It’s not who to leave your saucepans or Sylvania light bulbs to – things like that – it is more to do with your kids (if you have them…)

More importantly what will happen to them if you both die simultaneously. This is not a nice thought but it happens and the worst that could happen is that your kids could end up in care.  That is something I am terrified of so we are having a Will drawn up as a couple and as parents.

How to choose an executor? easy. Don’t choose someone who you would not want to know your persnonal business – things like your bank balance, or how much you owe. That’s how I go by things.

Choosing a guardian for your kids is the same thing; but make sure they agree and are happy to comply with your wishes as regards to raising your kids. And put it all down together as a couple and as parents.

One thing about the British banks and building societies right now is the feeling of will-they or won’t-they go bust. It si not just a sense of paranoia, but more a loss of confidence in those institutions that we assumed would always be there.

How about a bank that you can be assured will never go bust, never be bought over and never lose your money…

National Savings. Start with a basic Easy Access Savings Account; you’ll need £100 to open it and you can do this at your local post office. It is safe and solid, after all, it is part of HM Treasury and they print the money!

One word of caution; don’t let PO staff try and talk you round to a Post Office Savings Account because there is a difference and not one which you will be wanting – this account is underwritten by the Bank of Ireland and I would not be wanting to deposit my money with them right now…

Remember: National Savings NOT Post Office Savings.

Do it safely…

The case recently highlighted of Charlotte Buckley must serve as a warning to the many women who decide to lose weight before their wedding.

Of course every woman wants look like a princess on her special day; every woman dreams of that fairytale dress with the tiny waist and bared shoulders – but is it worth risking your health, or even relationship ?

Charlotte lost a great deal of weight in a very short space of time but even after the wedding she found herself well in the grip of anorexia. This common situation is now being termed brideorexia and almost caused Charlotte to lose her life; unfortunately her new marriage did not survive beyond a year. So was it worth it…just to fit into a dress ?

I know that there are many women who, despite reading about such cases, are ever determined to put their health and lives on the line by committing themselves to starvation diets; however they do it whether it be taking safe appetite suppressants or paying a fortune to get wrapped in plastic wrap in a salon or binge/purging – it is a problem which is not going away.

Yes, by all means lose a few pounds for your big day – most women find they lose a bit of weight anyway during the lead up and the anticipation – but do it the best way for your health and adopt a healthy eating plan and do some extra walking or exercise. This way you will really glow on your wedding day and you will not only feel a million dollars you will also look it.
