Having a student card can get you quite good deals discount-wise and so we thought we would pick up one of the HMV student discount cards last week. Arnold is a student with the Open University and so qualifies.
HMV advertise student discounts – but we discovered only when presenting one of their student discount cards. So we asked for an application at one of the stores – and were told by a sales assistant that we had to apply for it online. We went home, went online, then discovered you cannot apply online – you have to apply instore.
We visited a different HMV store this time and asked an assistant how to apply – only to be told again – online. We challenged this and were sent upstairs to the second level to see someone with a bit more authority (and more darn sense!).
Requesting once more the HMV student card Arnold presented his NUS Extra card as proof of his being a student only to be told – “Sorry, we have no cards left. Appl again in September…”
Now we were more than a little pissed with things. HMV openly promote their student discount facility, as well as their card, but you have to be lucky enough to get one at the beginning of the school term!
Yes, they actually limit the number of student cards they issue and only seem to offer them in limited numbers around September. Which is really not what they advertise and no other store does this. I say offer students their discounts right across the board HMV – when you see how many young people are buying their merchandise it is obvious the company is raking it in.
Play fair!
