Have a think about it. How much a part of your life, everyday or otherwise, is your little piece of plastic? Now, our grandparents probably could tell us yes, one can live without a credit card even though most senior citizens today own a credit card or two of their own. Nice to see that people changed with the times in some ways.
But if you had to live without one at all – could you do it? I would guess your answer would depend on what purpose your card serves in your life. Some people use their cards specifically for paying bills and other essential needs on time and pay them off at the end of each month. Many, many other people – the rest of the population I’d say – use their card as a symbolic form of one thing that very, very few people have…a constant means of cash flow. We want, we buy. Who wants to wait and save for that stereo or plasma TV these days…and try asking the kids to wait until Xmas for the Wii/Xbox.
Did I say ‘stereo’?…sorry…’home cinema system’ is more appropriate these days. I’m a child of the 70′s you see.
Anyway, when you think about it most of us could get by just using our credit cards for essential use if we could just get our heads, and that of our kids, around the concept of saving for those nice things we want. I am sure we would all be a lot better off. But then again…
We all like to take a holiday at some stage don’t we?…try booking a hotel online without a credit card – you cannot. Try booking a flight online, or at all, without a credit card – you cannot. Try checking into a hotel without a credit card – you cannot; unless you have a very large and spare wad of cash for the room deposit. Try renting a hire car without a credit card – you most definitely cannot. Forget it. Completely.
You see? the credit card has taken it’s place in our lives almost as an essential in it’s own right. It isn’t the average person who cannot function without a credit card – it is everyday business that cannot…and dictates that we cannot as well.
