If you are a Doubting Thomas with regards to the credit crunch and it’s effects then look no further than your local toy store. Which is what we did last week.
We all know that the shops are desperately trying to entice shoppers in their doors with huge reductions but there has to be few more depressing sights than an empty toy store ten days before Xmas Day.
We visited Smyths Toy Shop in Belfast last week – a huge store and usually bunged with shoppers at this time of year. In past years we had to park down the road and walk to it so full was the car park.
But last week…
We drove right up to the door and went inside. Honestly, if there were three people in the aisles that would be about it. Just three people and only one of them had anything in his trolley. The others were just browsing. The checkout staff looked totally bored.
This is a bad sign indeed – I wonder if Santa is feeling the pinch…
