Happy International Workers Day!

Posted by Wendy under Blogging

Well, it is May Day which, in effect, is International Workers Day so I guess that all of us who work can sit back and take a break on our special day. These days it commemmorates the introduction of the eight hour day although the millions of women out there who are Mums will be wondering about that…our working day extends waaay beyond eight hours!

Modern day May Day celebrations (also called Labour Day) stem from the 1886 Haymarket Affair which saw three days of industrial unrest as workers protested against social and economic conditions. Over here in Europe the day is used for people to protest against the various Govt’s and their cuts to social programs.

Either way it’s the one day of the year where we can thank those people from decades back who fought to make the general workplace more acceptable. When you think about it though, there is still room for change in many cases.
