Some friends recently told us about a trip they took to an isolated part of Italy where their car broke down several miles from the nearest village. Having no Italian language skills they could not even make a phone call – even if they knew who to call. Eventually a local farmer gave them a hand and got them on their way. This reminded me of our trip to Turkey where we got a flat tyre on a tricky bend of a coastal road – forget about waiting for any breakdown service, we had to roll our sleeves up and change it ourselves!
It was nerve-racking to say the least and something I hope never happens to us again on holiday. But it did teach us a lesson – that having some car maintenance skills up our sleeves helped us avoid a lot of inconvenience which would have spoilt what had been a wonderful family holiday.
