When we moved back here from France to re-establish ourselves and get our kids a decent education one of the more trying aspects was the prospect of taking over the care of the mother-in-law. My partner’s father passed away 18 months ago and his Mum has been struggling to adapt and is not really making a success of things – when you have been with someone for over sixty years you don’t have much experience of doing things as a single person I guess.
His Mum has been living with rheumatoid arthritis since 1998 and it has steadily gotten worse, particularly over the past 12 months. We had her x-rayed, blood tests done – the works – and now it has been suggested we take her to a specialist…only she refuses to go. If doctors would be a lot more lenient with the amount of painkillers they prescribe it would not hurt to wait for her to make up her mind, however these days GP’s are told how much medication to prescribe and beyond that limit they draw the line – regardless of how much pain someone is in.
But how to change the mind of a stubborn 83 year old…anyone got any answers???
