If you cannot practice what you preach then don’t.

The recent publicity surrounding the affair(s) – both romantically and financially – of Northern Ireland MLA Iris Robinson throws up a whole range of conflicting opinions and feelings about the entire sad story. Iris is also the wife of First Minister Peter Robinson and this couple were the so-called ‘golden couple’ of Northern Ireland’s politics.

I wouldn’t go as far as to call them that though…

While Iris is currently receiving depression treatment in a private clinic questions are being asked as to how such a supposedly upstanding pillar of the Protestant Church could be so judgemental of other people’s lifestyles – and extremely vocal about it – as well as being a Christian and practising all that Christianity entails…tolerance, piety, non-judgemental. That she has been exposed as a hypocrite is no doubt – to be denouncing Gays as ‘abominations’ whilst at the same time she is committing adultery with a man young enough to be her grandsoon – and on top of that her financial dealings are looking shady to say the least.

I cannot say I feel sorry for the woman though; I read an editorial last weekend where a female journalist called her ‘admirable’ for breaking free of the strict Protestant patriarchy, for doing what men have always done and not been hounded for it. But the fact remains that she was dishonest to her constituents, the Assembly and, most of all, her husband and family. Never was The Word spoken by someone who was less qualified to do so…
