It isn’t to difficult to work out why cases of depression and suicide are seeing an increase at the moment – people are being driven to despair by the banks and financial institutions. Many have lost their savings, cannot keep up with mortgage repayments or even pay their bills.
And at this time of year you are reminded of just how tough things are when you have very little to spend on the kids for Xmas. The banks have slashed credit card limits – we have a card with the Halifax which was paid off in full every month – and has been for years – and yet our credit limit was recently cut from £10 000 to a ridiculous £1000. How on earth does the Chancellor expect the population to spend when the banks are doing things like this…?
The sad fact is that some people are at the end of their tether and get there before they recognise the signs of depression; if you feel as though you are heading this way then you must seek help as early as possible. But try and look after yourself in the meantime; make the time for a 30 minute walk at least twice a week. Eat foods rich in vitamin B (bananas, marmite, some oily fish such as sardines or salmon…)
Often just doing this will give you a much needed ‘lift’ – diet and exercise can do wonders for your state of mind and perspective. Of course, if you are experiencing really dark thoughts and feel the urge to self-harm then get yourself off to the doctor asap.
