It’s getting onto Xmas and you’re out shopping and feel a little lucky so you go and buy one of those £1 scratch lottery tickets – let’s say you buy the one which promises you a chance of winning £50,000 on the front in big letters.
You pull out 2p, or use your thumb nail, and scratch away…there, you’ve won £2. Oh well, maybe next time…really?
I call this the great scratchie scam because these tickets are a huge rip off and here’s the reason. That elusive £50,000 will remain elusive for the entire population of scratchie buyers except for one person – and that’s the ONE person who buys the ONE ticket issued with the £50,000 on it.
That’s right. Only ONE ticket will have that amount, it will get won, but the public will continue to buy the same series of scratchie for weeks and even months believing that there are several first prizes to be won.
Not so. And I think this is fraud.
Next time you think about buying one of these worthless little pieces of paper just go online to the National Lottery UK’s website and check the results for the particular scratchie you like to buy. If the Big One has been won then forget about buying anymore of that series.
