Either things are worse than predicted or else consumers are being just that extra bit careful in the run up to Xmas this year. We have been out in the shops doing some browsing and have noticed how few people are actually buying anything – even in the toy stores the aisles are quite empty…and as for the checkouts, cashiers are standing idle.
Maybe people are shopping online more often nowadays – it is cheaper, less of a hassle and with schemes like vitacost coupons which help you to shop and get discounts – but very clearly consumers are waiting as long as possible this year to see how the retailers act with regards to offering discounts to get people to buy. I am a habitual online shopper, for convenience more than anything, but if I were a retailer I would be getting rather nervous with only two weeks left!
