There was a time when nobody would dare try and fill the shoes of workers going on strike – we all have memories of the cries and shouts of ‘scab!’ aimed at those who defied strike action and crossed picket lines back in the turbulent seventies. How times have changed!
This week 35,000 postal staff are due to begin industrial action around the UK – which couldn’t be better timing with Xmas around the corner thank’s guys – and desperate bosses are looking to fill their positions in the meantime.
An estimated 85,000 people are believed to be chasing the 30,000 posts which could also see the flood of applications rising to 100,000 in the next few days among those desperate for work in the recession. Royal Mail’s decision to recruit the extra staff is highly controversial and could even be illegal under 2003 legislation. Should they go ahead with the recruiting a whole new dispute could possibly arise.
Most of the positions open will involve delivering mail in rain, hail or shine, so if you are ready and able get yourself some boots!
