For our kids this will never be a consideration they will have to ponder over, but for us post-baby boom guys our forms of communication prior to the launch of the WWW and the introduction of software development probably seem like a distant memory. Remember waiting for a letter to arrive from overseas…? how did it take – two/three weeks? in most cases yes.
Inter-office communications were often via the ancient mode of the ‘memo’ and at secretarial school there was even part of the course devoted to how to write the correct memo. If you wanted to talk to someone somewhere else you called them on the phone – and not the mobile phone but the fixed landline phone. Kids were addicted to television rather than x-Box or Nintendo and if you teenage son spent hours in his room it was usually because he was getting up to nothing worse than listening to his stereo on full blast. Today kids sit glued to their monitors all through the night if allowed.
The internet came into our lives en masse in the 90′s and in the right hands it is a great and wonderful tool; in the wrong hands it is a curse and a weapon. But could we live without it if we had to…
