One of the things I like about so many of the national parks in Northern Ireland is that they offer tea rooms/coffee shops for people to use as an alternative to picnics. It is always nice to stop in to one after an afternoon of walking the trails but one thing about them is that they seem to have this habit of closing shop well before their advertised closing time.
Time and again we have called into a tea room for a meal around three in the afternoon only to find that all hot food is stopped at two – and yet they are supposed to serve until 5.00. Often you are left with a motley assortment of hard scones and sweet things that are not exactly hearty food. Yesterday we went to Crawfordsburn park and called into to the tea room there at 3pm to find a few items left and the staff mopping the floors, wiping down the tables and not really keen to serve you. They are supposed to close at 4.30 so I’d say they are more interested in going home as soon as they can. It is disappointing to be sure as many people were still coming in for a meal at 3.45 only to be told there was no food to be had!
